Past and Future of Robotic Surgery: EUMARCS and MERCY database

The EUMARCS and MERCY databases represent a shift from single-center experiences to large-scale collaborative research. They have shown that robotic colorectal surgery is increasingly adopted because it can:

  • Improve technical performance in complex colorectal procedures.
  • Facilitate intracorporeal reconstruction.
  • Reduce conversion to open surgery in selected patients.
  • Produce oncologic outcomes comparable to laparoscopy while potentially improving recovery.

Although robotic surgery continues to face challenges related to cost and access, ongoing technological innovation, increasing competition among robotic platforms, and data from international registries are expected to drive broader adoption and more individualized colorectal surgical care.
